Man Utd player ratings vs Aston Villa: 9/10 proves he's untouchable as Reds end on a high

Manchester United nicked a final-day win over Aston Villa to deny their opponents Champions League football in controversial circumstances. The visitors felt they should have been ahead when Morgan Rogers pinched the ball from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and fired into an empty net, but the referee blew his whistle for a foul before it crossed the line, preventing VAR from intervening.

Amad Diallo went down the other end and headed the Red Devils in front, before Christian Eriksen put the game beyond doubt from the spot on his final appearance for the club. But it was Bruno Fernandes who, again, proved his worth to manager Ruben Amorim and showed that he cannot be part of this summer's clearout. Here, Express Sport takes you through how each United player performed on the day...

Man Utd player ratings vs Aston Villa (3-4-3)

Altay Bayindir: 4

Got extremely lucky that the referee blew for a foul after Morgan Rogers dispossessed him but before his shot hit the net. Controversial, to say the least.

Victor Lindelof: 5

Quiet on his farewell appearance for the club. Passing wasn't as sharp as it could have been.

Harry Maguire: 7

Popped up with more great work on the right wing - of all places - set up a chance for Diogo Dalot which culminated in a shot hitting the post.

Ayden Heaven: 7 (Evans, 66)

Slack ball to Ollie Watkins wasn't punished early in the game, but a solid performance from that point on. Came off injured just after the hour mark.

Noussair Mazraoui: 8 (Dalot, 20)

Only played 20 minutes before coming off with an apparent hamstring injury, but what a bright 20 minutes it was. Looked really sharp and created a big opening for Mason Mount with a run and cross from the right.

Bruno Fernandes: 9

Once again proved that United cannot afford to lose him. Pulled strings throughout and threw in fancy touches, deft passes, powerful shots from range. Then came up with a brilliant cross which Amad headed home.

Casemiro: 6

Clipped the post with a cheeky curling effort, then skied a brilliant chance when the ball bounced invitingly for him in the 60th minute.

Patrick Dorgu: 6

Created an opportunity for Mount with a nice lay-off early on, but otherwise a quiet afternoon.

Amad Diallo: 8

Had much more influence on the game when he switched from right-sided No.10 to right wing-back at the interval. Went close with a first-half volley, took his header well in the 77th minute and then won the penalty which Eriksen converted.

Rasmus Hojlund: 6 (Obi, 81)

Had his moments. Put in a cross for Mount which nearly resulted in a goal, got taken down by Martinez which resulted in his sending off, and headed in before being pulled back for offside. But once again, an unforgivable number of fluffed chances.

Mason Mount: 8 (Eriksen, 66)

Tested the goalkeeper with a sequence of attempts on goal, and was lively throughout the game. Looked a lot sharper than he did in the Europa League final. It was his pressure on Matty Cash which led to the sloppy back-pass and the subsequent red.

SUBS

Diogo Dalot: 7 (Mainoo, 46)

Clattered the post with a sharp effort but was on the pitch for less than half an hour. Not immediately clear why he was taken off.

Kobbie Mainoo: 7

Robbed the ball off Pau Torres and put it on a plate for Hojlund, but the Dane could not convert.

Jonny Evans: 6

Nearled rounded off his Red Devils career with a headed goal but Robin Olsen denied him.

Christian Eriksen: 7

Signed off on his United career with a well-taken penalty after launching what would have been a spectacular free-kick onto the roof of the net.

Chido Obi: N/A

A late addition.
