United dominated the first-half and went close to an opener through both Amad Diallo and then Diogo Dalot, before Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez was sent off on the stroke of half-time for a wild foul on Rasmus Hojlund.
There was a moment of huge controversy when Morgan Rogers pounced on an error from Bayindir and found the back of the net, only for the strike to be ruled out by VAR. Unai Emery was furious on the touchline and would soon be even angrier when Amad Diallo headed in at the back-post after a brilliant cross from Bruno Fernandes. He was even angrier when Amad won a penalty and Christian Eriksen converted to end their Champions League dreams.
Here is how we rated the United players at Old Trafford:
He got away with a calamitous piece of goalkeeping that could easily have been punished with a goal. A few good saves towards the end. 5
