The Premier League have confirmed they could not award a goal to Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers because referee Thomas Bramall had already blown his whistle.
Villa thought they had taken the lead in the crucial clash against Manchester United with less than 20 minutes to go when Rogers had pipped Altay Bayindir to the ball to score.
Referee Bramall blew his whistle for a foul as he thought that Bayindir had two hands on the ball when Rogers nicked it off of him, prompting a furious reaction from Villa's players and Unai Emery.
However, replays have since shown that the Turkish goalkeeper did not have two hands on the ball.
Confirming why the goal was disallowed, the Premier League's Match Centre released the following statement: "The referee’s call was a free kick to Manchester United with Bayindir deemed to be in control of the ball before Rogers gained possession.
"The whistle was blown by the referee before the ball entered the goal, therefore the incident was not reviewable by the VAR."
Moments after the goal was ruled out, United took the lead at the other end through Amad.
United would then receive a penalty for a foul on Amad and the annoyance of Emery was clear to see as he sarcastically applauded the decision.
Christian Eriksen dispatched the resulting penalty with ease.
Before United scored, Villa were on their way to the Champions League as Newcastle United were losing at home to Everton at St James' Park.
As things stand a place in the Europa League awaits Villa as Nottingham Forest are also losing at home to Chelsea.
