Man United's seven biggest winners vs Aston Villa, embarrassed £4m man is one of three losers

Manchester United pulled the curtain on the 2024/25 Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Following the disappointment of the Europa League final, Manchester United responded by dominating Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

From the very first minute, United pinned Villa back but once again the Red Devils had issues in front of goal.

Eventually, Amad Diallo found the breakthrough with his 11th goal in all competitions before Christian Eriksen doubled the lead from the penalty spot. United have finished the season in 15th position.

Winners

Amad Diallo

Since Erik ten Hag was replaced with Ruben Amorim in November, Amad has grown to become a key player for this United side.

He was sorely missed during his spell on the sidelines, but he has resumed where he left off since returning.

United created an abundance of chances against Villa but were finding it extraordinarily difficult to put the ball in the back of the net.

However, Amad stepped up and delivered when his side needed him.

Mason Mount

Mason Mount was poor against Tottenham in the final after Amorim made the brave decision to start him ahead of Alejandro Garnacho.

Amorim is a huge admirer of Mason Mount and has been since his first day at Carrington. The English star has been tipped to become an integral part of this United side, and he showed his qualities against Villa.

A bright start from United as Mason Mount sees two great efforts saved by Martinez.

Mount had two early chances to score and he thrived in the No.10 position to the left of Rasmus Hojlund.

A promising end to the season, and hopefully he can hit the ground running in 2025/26.

Ruben Amorim

After losing in Bilbao, there were huge questions asked of Ruben Amorim’s future as Manchester United’s head coach.

Amorim offered to resign if the fans or owners no longer wanted him, but he also confirmed that he is fully committed to rebuilding the club.

The Portuguese head coach certainly managed to regroup his players for the final home game of the season. It was one-way traffic all match, and it proves the dressing room is still very much behind him.

Bruno Fernandes

There has been plenty of speculation about Saudi Arabia’s interest in Bruno Fernandes this week.

After the defeat in the Europa League final, Fernandes offered to leave United if Ineos wanted to cash in.

Despite his disappointing display in Spain, Fernandes proved against Villa why he is so priceless to United and Amorim.

Fernandes’ teammates are desperate for him to stay, and simply put – United cannot afford to head into 25/26 without him.

Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen

There will be a huge overhaul of United’s squad this summer, but three players who are confirmed to be leaving are Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen.

Amorim gave all three players a chance to say goodbye to Old Trafford, with Lindelof playing from the start.

Eriksen marked his final game with a goal, but all three players got the send-off they deserve.

Losers

Alejandro Garnacho

Last week, Alejandro Garnacho questioned Amorim’s decision to drop him in the final and voiced his displeasure at being on the bench.

Since then, Amorim told Garnacho to find a new club, and his time at the club certainly seems over after he was dropped entirely from the matchday squad against Villa.

United then proceeded to put on a very impressive performance without Garnacho, and the 20-year-old may now make an awkward exit this summer without making a real goodbye.

Noussair Mazraoui

United’s terrible 2024/25 Premier League campaign has come to an end, but the Red Devils are now set to jet out on the post-season tour of Asia.

However, Amorim may have to leave Noussair Mazraoui at home after he appeared to pull a hamstring in the first half against Villa.

The 27-year-old has been a shining light in United’s disappointing season and Amorim will hope to have him back fit ready for the all-important pre-season preparations.

Altay Bayindir

Not only was Garnacho dropped, but Amorim also left Andre Onana out of the squad completely against Villa giving a chance for Altay Bayindir to start.

In what was likely Bayindir’s final game for United, the £4m signing nearly made a monumental error in the second half when he spilled the ball in his own box.

However, his blushes were spared because referee Thomas Bramall blew his whistle moments before the incident. A huge let-off and United fans will be glad to see the back of the Turkish shot-stopper.
