Trent Alexander-Arnold chokes back tears and consoled by team-mates on Liverpool farewell

Trent Alexander-Arnold struggled to hold back tears as he was consoled by his team-mates on the pitch during a final game for Liverpool. The full-back, who came through the academy and went on to make over 250 appearances for his boyhood club, is leaving at the end of the season on a free transfer.

He is expected to join Real Madrid and link up with England colleague Jude Bellingham, but not before bidding an emotional farewell to the team he has won every trophy possible with. He received a much more positive reception from the Anfield crowd than his previous appearance, being applauded by the Liverpool faithful as he entered the pitch as a half-time substitution.

Alexander-Arnold created several chances in the second half before Mohamed Salah equalised, cancelling out Ismaila Sarr's first-half opener, ending the season with a 1-1 draw to FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.

Once the full-time whistle blew, cameras immediately panned to Alexander-Arnold as he took in the iconic Anfield ground and showed his emotion, choking back tears moments after his last game for the club ended.

He was consoled by Harvey Elliott, who gave Alexander-Arnold a big hug and offered some words of encouragement, before Luis Diaz and Virgil van Dijk also came over to embrace the departing defender.

Alexander-Arnold duly joined in the celebrations as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy aloft at full-time, with Van Dijk presented the silverware by club legend Alan Hansen, after Ian Rush presented Salah with the Golden Boot award for the league's top scorer.

The England full-back's name was greeted by a loud cheer as it was read out by the stadium announcer. He lifted his arms aloft before receiving his winner's medal, knowing his unceremonious exit left many supporters with a sour taste in their mouths.

"After 20 years at Liverpool football club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season," Alexander-Arnold announced on social media at the beginning of the month. "This is easily the hardest decision I've ever made in my life."

"This club has been my whole life – my whole world - for 20 years. From the academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all.

"But, I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally."
