Newcastle United player ratings - Magpies struggle in finale after heroic season

Newcastle United lost [1-0 to Everton at St James' Park but still qualified for the Champions League](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/newcastle-united-stagger-champions-league-31719007) by the skin of their teeth.

The Magpies could not break Everton down in the first half despite Sven Botman being denied by Jordan Pickford. And things threatened to get worse when Carlos Alcaraz headed home a winner at the Gallowgate End.

Late chances came and went but Newcastle would go into the Champions League next season after Aston Villa lost 2-0 at Man United.

Here's how the Magpies rated overall against Everton:

**Nick Pope 8**

Kept Newcastle in the game with some key saves. Left exposed for Alcaraz header but had a stunning game.

**Jacob Murphy 5**

Shackled defensively but lacked impact before going off.

**Fabian Schar 7**

Stayed composed despite picking up yellow card. Sent one effort just wide as Newcastle searched for equaliser.

**Sven Botman 6**

Denied by Pickford three times in the first half but did not look fully fit after a niggling season of injuries.

**Dan Burn 6**

An untypical slip allowed Alcaraz to head home. Relatively sound otherwise.

**Tino Livramento 8**

Caused problems on both sides after being shifted across the pitch.

**Sandro Tonali 8**

Tried to influence the game with a range of crosses.

**Bruno Guimaraes 7**

A nervous display but never stopped working.

**Anthony Gordon 6**

Did not get going and had just one shot of any note. Hooked at half-time.

**Harvey Barnes 5**

Did not deliver his best form on the final day of the season. Had his moments.

**Alexander Isak 6**

Looks like a player in need of a rest.

**Subs**

Joe Willock 6 (for Gordon 46)

Kieran Trippier 6 (for Botman 63)

Callum Wilson 6 (for Murphy 70)

William Osula (for Barnes 88)
