Morgan Rogers scores for Aston Villa vs Man United only to see the goal disallowed
Former Aston Villa midfielder Paul Merson was left baffled as Morgan Rogers' goal was disallowed against Manchester United.
Despite being down to ten men, Villa thought they had taken the lead with less than 20 minutes to go as Rogers nicked the ball off Altay Bayindir and scored.
However, referee Thomas Bramall blew for a foul on Bayindir as he felt the goalkeeper had two hands on the ball.
Replays showed that this was not the case and the goal should have been allowed but, because Bramall had blown his whistle before the ball was in the net, VAR could not intervene.
This proved to be a costly error as, moments later, Amad opened the scoring for United.
Christian Eriksen wrapped up the three points from the penalty spot to deny Villa a place in the Champions League and condemn them to the Europa League next season.
A point for Villa would have been enough to secure Champions League football and understandably at the full time whistle, Unai Emery was furious with Bramall.
That fury was shared by Merson who made 144 appearances for the club.
He was in the Sky Sports studio this afternoon covering the Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea match but made his feelings clear on the incident.
"No chance [did Bayindir have two hands on the ball]," he fumed.
"If that was in Rugby League for a try, that would not be given.
"He never had it under control."
As Mike Dean confirmed that the goal would have stood had Bramall not blown for a free kick, Merson sarcastically said: "That is only £200m [lost]."
