Ryan Gravenberch and Emiliano Martinez both received red cards for Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively as the 2024/25 campaign came to a dramatic end.
The latter was shown a straight red card at Old Trafford as Aston Villa failed to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League after suffering a 2-0 defeat.
At Anfield, Gravenberch was also dismissed with a straight red card after fouling Daichi Kamada as the last man, denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

After the respective incidents, many are wondering whether these suspensions carry over into the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
Ryan Gravenberch and Emiliano Martinez will miss the start of next season
Unfortunately for Liverpool and Aston Villa, the three-game bans for Ryan Gravenberch and Emiliano Martinez will carry over into next term.
Another club will also be missing a player heading into the new campaign, as Chelsea are without Nicolas Jackson for the first game, after he received a straight red card during the 2-0 defeat against Newcastle earlier in May.
Aston Villa may end up being unmoved about this rule, however, as Martinez could leave Villa Park this summer amid approaches from Chelsea and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Can Ryan Gravenberch play in the FA Community Shield for Liverpool vs Crystal Palace?
Despite picking up a straight red card against Crystal Palace in the season finale, Gravenberch is allowed to face the Eagles at Wembley for the FA Community Shield in August.

The traditional curtain raiser is not considered to be a competitive fixture, and is officially classified as a pre-season friendly, so it does not recognise any suspensions players hold coming into the game.
Any red cards received in that showpiece event at Wembley will also not count towards the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, as was the case after Branislav Ivanovic was dismissed for a challenge on Aleksandr Kolarov during the FA Community Shield clash between Chelsea and Manchester City in August 2012.
