Manchester United to release three players after Aston Villa win

Man Utd defeated Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season.

Manchester United have confirmed they will release three players after they finished the Premier League season with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen scored in the second-half of the match after Emi Martinez had been sent off for the away side and Morgan Rogers saw a goal controversially disallowed.

Speaking after the win, Ruben Amorim labelled his debut campaign a 'disaster season' but promised supporters the good times would return soon. It is set to be a summer of seismic change at Old Trafford after they finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Amorim is set to remain in charge of the club for the summer and will be given the freedom to overhaul the first-team squad into his vision. It was hinted at with the team selection against Villa as Alejandro Garnacho was omitted from the matchday party.

Three players to be released

Manchester United supporters embarked on a lap of appreciation after their victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, while Ruben Amorim also apologised to fans in a speech on the Old Trafford pitch.

In the moments before the Portuguese head coach took to the microphone, it was also confirmed that Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen would all leave the club as free agents at the end of the season. The trio are all out of contract at the end of the campaign and have not been offered new deals by Amorim.

Lindelof will leave after eight seasons with the club since he arrived from Benfica in 2017. The Sweden defender has made 284 appearances for United and won both the FA Cup and the League Cup.

There will also be emotional goodbyes for Eriksen, who made 107 appearances during his three seasons at the club, and Evans who will leave after his second spell at Old Trafford. The veteran centre-back made 241 appearances for United, where he won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, Club World Cup, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
