Trent Alexander-Arnold broke down in tears at Anfield as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy after his final appearance.

The homegrown right-back was overcome with emotion after Virgil van Dijk lifted the trophy and the Reds paraded it in front of a delirious Kop on Sunday afternoon.

Two weeks on from being booed by home fans when he came on against Arsenal, Alexander-Arnold had received a positive reception when he came on for Conor Bradley at half-time against Crystal Palace.

He had looked pensive when approaching the stage to pick up his medal after the match, but when his name was read out to the fans Alexander-Arnold received huge cheers.

Speaking after the game, he said: "I didn't know what to expect at Anfield after what happened a few weeks ago. To get the reception that I got means more than anything to me."

Many fans have been left angered by Alexander-Arnold leaving his boyhood club on a free transfer, but his Reds team-mates have been at pains to point out that he deserved a good sent-off.

Alexander-Arnold said: "I hope that one day the fans of this club will be able to recognise the hard work and everything I've done for this team. There wasn't a second where I didn't think about this team. I've loved every single minute of it. It goes down as the best day of my life for me."

Alexander-Arnold has now lifted his second Premier League title with the Reds, but the first in front of fans after Covid-19 interrupted Liverpool's celebrations when they won the league in 2020, forcing the trophy presentation to take place inside an empty Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp, Alexander-Arnold's manager then, had made his first return to Anfield since leaving the Reds last year in order to watch the match, and speaking at an event on Friday he made clear his displeasure at the booing.

"I don't want to tell you what you have to think. I can tell you what you think is wrong," said Klopp.

"I don't tell you you should not be angry, you should not be disappointed, I tell you don't forget. This club doesn't forget.

"I watched the game when he came on and I heard the booing. I switched the telly [television] off. Honestly, I could not have been more disappointed at this moment."
