Callum Wilson looks to have played his last game for Newcastle United.

St James’ Park was a cauldron of noise at full-time after the Magpies secured Champions League qualification for the second time in three seasons, despite losing 1-0 to the Toffees.

Callum Wilson appears to bid emotional farewell

During the celebrations, Wilson first moved over to the Gallowgate End and waved to the Newcastle fans before heading towards the tunnel in tears. He then came back onto the pitch and applauded all four corners of the stadium before joining his teammates on the lap of honour.

Wilson missed the opening three months of the campaign with a back and hamstring problem before suffering another setback in December. Since returning in February, Wilson has remained fit and available but has been restricted to just two Premier League starts.

Wilson has scored 49 goals in 130 appearances for United since joining from AFC Bournemouth for £20million in 2020 but his injury history and being behind Alexander Isak in the pecking order have cast major doubt over his future.

What Eddie Howe has said about Callum Wilson

When asked if Wilson was bidding farewell, Howe said: “Well, let's wait and see. We're going to sit down and talk with his representatives. What I can say is Callum Wilson is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are.

“Really professional, brave. I mean, to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult moment. The club needed hope and Callum gave them hope. He led the line with that responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well.

“He brings a positivity to the group. He's a leader within the changing room. He's just been incredible and let's wait and see what happens. It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There's still so much respect there between the two.”

“Yeah, obviously I've got a very close relationship with him, as I'd like to think I have with, I won't say all, because that's impossible. But the majority of the players in the squad, I think it's really important that I do. But he's someone I just respect immensely.

“I've seen the struggles that he's had in his career. I've also seen the successes. I've seen the development. He's never someone you'd want to lose from the group. But obviously, there's challenges that we face as a football club.

“Financial challenges with PSR, with a whole host of different decisions to make. And that's why I said, let's wait and see what happens.”
