Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim issued a rallying cry to the seemingly upbeat Old Trafford faithful, following his side's 2-0 win over Champions League-chasing Aston Villa, apologising to fans of the Red Devils and promising that better things are to come.

The United head coach admitted he was "really disappointed" at a number of the team's performances, and offered his sympathies that his side had been "really hard to support ... in many games".

The speech, made on the Old Trafford pitch with Amorim surrounded by his squad, comes in the wake of Man United's horror show in Bilbao earlier this week against fellow Prem strugglers Spurs.

The three-time Champions League winners hardly turned up in the Europa League final, seemingly crumbling under the pressure in a 1-0 defeat, meaning they miss out on any European football next season.

Its not just in Europe that United have faltered. Their league finish of 15th place means that this has been their worst season domestically for more than 30 years, considering they crashed out of both the League cup and FA cup too.

In spite of the struggles, Amorim was keen to emphasise that the good things are on the horizon for the much maligned Manchester club

“Six months ago in my first three games, two victories, one draw, I said ‘the storm is coming’. After this disaster season, the good days are coming. ”

“If there is one club in the world that proved in the past it can overcome any situation or disaster – it’s Manchester United Football Club. ”

As well as apologising to the fans, Amorim seemingly offered an olive branch to some of his players, too.

"I want to say sorry to my players. Sometimes I wasn’t fair, but I try and always be honest."

United fans will no doubt be wondering quite what their manager is referring to, especially in the context of public fallouts with talent youngster Alejandro Garnacho and now Villa-loanee Marcus Rashford.

Both players, along with fellow academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, are widely linked with permanent moves away from the club.

Reports yesterday suggested Amorim had met with a number of squad players to confirm Garnacho would be leaving.

The words came after a 2–0 win over Aston Villa, with goals from Amad and Christian Eriksen (penalty) following a red card for Villa keeper Emi Martinez.

The result meant Villa missed out on the Champions League. United finished 15th.
