Everton finished their season on a high, beating Newcastle United 1-0 away from home on the final day of the Premier League.

The final run of the season has been emotional for those in Blue, firstly saying goodbye to Goodison Park and now to players who won’t be making the move to the Hill Dickinson stadium.

Abdoulaye Doucoure is one of those leaving Everton upon the expiry of his contract, despite discussions to extend his deal previously.

Doucoure sends goodbye message to Everton

Doucoure wasn’t in from the start, but David Moyes brought him on in the 76th minute at St James’ Park for his final appearance in Blue.

The midfielder replaced the goalscorer Carlos Alcaraz and ensured his side saw the game out to end the campaign on a high.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

What started as a difficult season for Everton was turned around by Moyes, which was surely highlighted by beating a side that qualified for the Champions League on the final day of the term.

Now, the boss will be eager to get to work over the summer to make sure his side is in good shape to push even further up the table next season.

While Doucoure won’t be a part of that, the 32-year-old was pleased to go out on a high with the Toffees as he posted a goodbye message from the St James’ Park dressing rooms on X (25 May).

Doucoure said: “Amazing to finish with a win. It’s been a pleasure, my friends love. All the best, Toffees.”

Doucoure leaves Everton with head held high

It has been a transitional season for Everton with The Friedkin Group taking control, the return of Moyes and a move away this summer.

Moyes will be eager to continue the progress he has shown so far, and for the first time in a while, the Toffees will have money to spend in the summer transfer window, allowing for the addition of new faces.

With that in mind, there has to be a representation of new beginnings this summer and younger faces being brought into the fold.

Doucoure has been a servant for Everton.

Nevertheless, Doucoure is one man who can definitely say goodbye to supporters at Everton with his head held high, knowing that he has pulled the Merseyside club through some of their worst moments on the pitch.

This is a relationship that certainly seems to be ending with love on both sides, an apt conclusion.
