Newcastle United are set for a Champions League windfall
The scenes at St James' Park as Newcastle United clinched their Champions League place against Everton will live long in the memory - and there will be celebrations off the pitch too as the Magpies secured a welcome financial boost.
We all know the riches of United's Saudi-backed PIF owners, but the reality of financial fair play and profit and sustainability rules mean the club are restricted when it comes to investing in the first-team squad. The Newcastle hierarchy have made it clear that they must increase revenue streams if they want to continue to spend - and not have to sell their prize assets.
New sponsorhip deals and a switch to adidas as kit manufacturers have all played their part, but Champions League football brings guaranteed income that will only help the club balance against the pressures of FFP and PSR.
But how much will Newcastle make from the coming Champions League campaign? Official numbers won't be clear until later this year, but based on the current figures, it's a sizeable sum.
in 2024-25, the toal prize pot was £2.06 billion (up from £1.74bn) and every club that qualifies for the league stage received a guaranteed payment of £15.7m. That's even if they lose every game.
Each win the group stage adds a further £1.8m and a draw £590,000. The sides who finish in the top eight of the league, and automatically qualify for the last 16, received £1.7m. Side which finish ninth to 16th land an extra £840,000.
After that, the winners of each round received the following amounts, with each PSG or Inter Milan in line to land £21.5 for winning the entire competition.
Winner**: £21.5m**
Runner-up: £15.9m
Semi-finals: £12.9m
Quarter-finals: £10.7m
Round-of-16: £9.4m
For example, Inter Milan won six of their league games and drew one, so will net at least £77.6m even if they lose the final. Arsenal received around £60m for reaching the semi-finals. The figures for the next season are yet to be confirmed, but it is thought they will be broadly similar to this season, meaning Newcastle can look forward to a welcome financial bonus.
