Carson Wentz' name emerges as a Steelers backup QB option

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ priority at the quarterback position remains Aaron Rodgers but with no certain timeline and the four-time MVP still dealing with personal issues, the team has to consider other options at least.

For now, the most popular alternative is Kirk Cousins, who the team would have to trade for from the Atlanta Falcons. Yet, if that did not work out, the Steelers could look to free agency for one other name.

Insider Ed Bouchette theorized the Steelers could look to Carson Wentz as a fallback option.

“I could see them signing a guy like Carson Wentz to be the backup.” Bouchette said. “Go with those three guys — (Will) Howard, (Mason) Rudolph, and Wentz — and just muddle through this year. Regroup, and see what you can do next year for a quarterback.”

The Steelers only have three quarterbacks on the roster, but general manager Omar Khan said they will head into training camp with four. He has hinted in the past that the fourth quarterback will not be a young player but a veteran.

“I’d say that’s a safe assumption,” Khan said in April when asked if the team would add another veteran quarterback.

Since then, the team has added Will Howard, its young, upside option. The second veteran is intended to be Rodgers, but if that falls through, Wentz could be considered.

Wentz was a second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 2017 when he had a breakout year as the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, but after signing a mega-contract with them, things went downhill fast.

Since then, Wentz has floated around the league as a backup, spending last year with the Kansas City Chiefs as Patrick Mahomes’ backup quarterback.
