Gary Lineker quipped, 'it wasn't supposed to end like this' as he kicked off his final Match of the Day show.
The former England striker hosted the BBC's Premier League highlights program for the last time on Sunday, following the channel's announcement of his departure last November due to his contract expiring. Although he was set to front the BBC's FA Cup and World Cup coverage next season, his exit was accelerated amid controversy surrounding a perceived anti-Semitic tweet.
Introducing his final show, which featured a montage of his memorable moments, Lineker said: "It wasn't meant to end this way but with the title race over and the relegation places left confirmed, the Champions League was all we had left to talk about. I'm delighted to say joining us for this one, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards."
Lineker had also addressed his impending departure on social media, stating: "Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember - both on the pitch and in the studio.
"I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years. As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything antisemitic - it goes against everything I stand for.
"However, I recognize the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action."
BBC director general Tim Davie added: "Gary has acknowledged the mistake he made. Accordingly, we have agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season.

"Gary has been a defining voice in football coverage for the BBC for over two decades. His passion and knowledge have shaped our sports journalism and earned him the respect of sports fans across the UK and beyond. We want to thank him for the contribution he has made."
BBC's director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, told staff in an email: "It is sad to be saying goodbye to such a brilliant broadcaster and I also want to thank Gary for his years of service. As ever, if you have questions, you know where I am.
"Let's finish the season strongly with Gary's final show, enjoy an incredible summer of sport and look forward with excitement to what lies ahead."
Commentator Mark Scott said: "One of the best in the business makes his final appearance in front of the Match of the Day cameras, and you could say the same of Kevin De Bruyne..."
The BBC has already unveiled the successors to Lineker's role. Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates, and Gabby Logan are all set to share the upcoming season's presenting duties.
