Ruben Amorim has warned Manchester United will be limited in the transfer market this summer due to the Premier League's financial rules.

Aston Villa were looking for a win at Old Trafford on Sunday in their bid to secure Champions League football, but they looked burdened by the weight of expectation and United were the better side.

Amad and Christian Eriksen got on the scoresheet in a 2-0 victory for United, which sealed just their 11th win in the Premier League this season. United ended a nightmare season on a positive note, but Amorim will have his work cut out in the summer transfer window to help United climb up the table next season.

"We did a lot of changes as a club in this six months and changed so many things that a normal club could do in three years, a lot of people leaving," Amorim said after the game.

"Day by day, who is in charge in Carrington, we change a lot of things. The standards were really high. It is hard to talk about that [squad changes]. We have fair play rules and we are limited, especially this year. We need to have patience. Of course we will have changes.

"You saw today three players are leaving [Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans] and they are three characters. The players need the characteristics to play in a different way, so we are doing that, but we have to be patient because we have the limitation of fair play rules."

Amorim promised a brighter future in his post-match speech, and added: "I think we are again, improving as a team, sometimes the results don’t show that but we are improving.

"In the final it was not a great game but if you ask anyone who was the better team it is clear. Today we did a good game against a team who with one point could be in Champions League. Then we are changing so many things in Carrington, you cannot see it but we will be better in the future."

Amorim will be under pressure if United start next season slowly and he conceded that is 'normal'.

"That is a risk when I started six months ago," Amorim said. "If you start now you can have a pre-season and that season will be the first season. I have to deliver next year.

"I am really confident we are going to play better and get more results. It will take time. We will suffer again but we need to have better results, that’s for sure

"I am really excited to finish the season. I am really excited to start again. We cannot lose any time. We need to prepare the pre-season. In the next years we will have World Cup, so will not have time to take advantage of that. We will have some changes in our squad."

The Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR) have forced Premier League clubs into sales of players they would have preferred to keep, and United must raise cash through transfers this summer.

Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho are set to be offloaded and outgoings could reach double figures.
