Alexander Isak of Newcastle United reacts during the Premier League match between Newcastle and Everton
Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak looks set to stay at the club after qualification for next season's Champions League
Newcastle United are back in the Champions League after capping off a memorable campaign on Sunday.
Despite a 1-0 defeat to Everton, with Jordan Pickford going above and beyond to thwart Newcastle's efforts, the Magpies managed to secure their place in Europe's premier competition courtesy of Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. This result not only confirmed Newcastle's Champions League participation but also guaranteed a £100million windfall.
However, it's evident that the Toon will be keen to avoid another nail-biting afternoon like this one, signalling a significant recruitment drive in the offing. Head coach Eddie Howe had alluded to this in the lead-up to the match as they look towards a huge summer transfer window.
Below are some of the latest Magpies headlines as well as a view on each one...
Isak latest
The Athletic's David Ornstein has claimed that star striker Alexander Isak will stay at St James' Park off the back of their qualification for Europe's elite competition.
"For them, it's not so much about the PSR, it's more about their stature, and the Saudi-led ownership ambitions to really kick on," he told NBC Sports.
"Also, keeping somebody like Alexander Isak. If Newcastle reached the Champions League today, he is going nowhere.
"If they don't, I think some suitors may think there's a glimmer, a slight chance that they could test the waters on that front. Newcastle's perspective is that he's not for sale at any price."
ChronicleLive says: "Keeping Isak will be crucial for the Magpies and their development under Eddie Howe. In truth, any fee required to sign him will put off many clubs, and that's excellent news for Newcastle."
Guimaraes hint
Bruno Guimaraes has appeared to confirm that he will be staying at the club amid regular speculation linking the midfielder with a big-money move elsewhere.
Speaking to Sky Sports News after Newcastle’s 1-0 loss to Everton at St James’ Park, he said: “Feel very well, feel unbelievable. I think for me, it has been an unbelievable year. First year as a captain, played 38 of 38 games in the Premier League. I’m very, very happy.
“Winning a trophy for this club. What a season. I will always remember this one. I’m very, very happy and proud of our team, of myself, of these fans. Next season, we go back again. We never stop. We’ve won a cup, but we want more.”
ChronicleLive says: "Guimaraes is another player Newcastle will be desperate to keep, and his affection for the city and club should mean he stays put for the foreseeable future."
