Railston: United could axe four players who started against Aston Villa this summer

Ruben Amorim had a chance to make a statement with his Manchester United team selection on the final day of the season and dropped Andre Onana and Alejandro Garnacho from the squad.

Garnacho was omitted after being informed he can find a new club in the summer and Onana seemingly for underperforming, but Amorim could have been harsher with his selection.

Indeed he started four players who could all leave Old Trafford this summer. Altay Bayindir was selected in goal and the Turkey international has proven he is not good enough to be the second-choice goalkeeper.

Bayindir had his day in the sun when he produced a fine shot-stopping display against Arsenal in the FA Cup, but he must be replaced. He was incredibly fortunate when referee Thomas Bramall blew his whistle prior to Morgan Rogers capitalising on Bayndir's error with VAR therefore unable to get involved. The home keeper will have breathed a sigh of relief when Amad scored minutes later.

Victor Lindelof started and is set to leave when his contract expires. He was signed by Jose Mourinho in 2017 and has been a decent servant, but he has undoubtedly overstayed his welcome at United and his inclusion in the team meant Tyler Fredricson was denied another first-team start.

While Fredricson might not have a long-term future at his boyhood club, he would have given his all for the shirt as an academy product and has looked comfortable since making his debut.

Lindelof was given the nod instead, despite having his bags packed for his exit, and starting Casemiro was another questionable decision given he is facing an uncertain future.

It would be logical to keep Casemiro had United qualified for the Champions League, but they fluffed their lines in Bilbao and don't need a bloated squad next season.

Casemiro was chalk and cheese in the Premier League and Europa League this term, struggling against English opposition but looking something like the force of old against European sides.

Bayindir was lucky to get away with his error when it was 0-0.

United should look to offload Casemiro and cash in on the back of his reputation being improved by his European form. The 33-year-old's stock is only going to drop from here on out.

Rasmus Hojlund won the foul to get the clumsy Emiliano Martinez sent off just before half-time, and had the ball in the net when play resumed, only to be flagged offside, but it was a surprise to see him in the team. Hojlund has been toothless in front of goal this season and probably wouldn't have scored.

Amorim rolled the dice with the Dane in the Europa League final, despite Hojlund performing poorly against Chelsea, and the United boss had nothing to lose by giving Chido Obi his first Old Trafford start.

United will sign a new striker in the summer and it would be a huge shock to see Hojlund start the opening game of the 2025/2026 season.

The other starters against Aston Villa will be safe from the axe by default. The reality is a radical squad overhaul won't be possible and many of the underperformers will remain.

The outgoings could reach double digits - Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans came on from the bench in the second half and will both leave - and that might not be enough for Amorim.

United have suffered their worst campaign in the club's modern history and heads will roll from the playing squad, but everything must be done to keep Bruno Fernandes.

There are question marks around almost every player's form this term, but not Fernandes, who played a wonderful cross to Amad and passed the penalty to Eriksen as a miserable season ended on a positive note.
