Ange Postecoglou has sent a strong message to Tottenham Hotspur owner Daniel Levy over a potential summer transfer.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ‘favourites’ to beat Liverpool and Arsenal to the signing of RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons this summer.

Spurs have ended the Premier League campaign in 17th place, just one position above the relegation zone, but those league woes have been largely forgiven thanks to Europa League success. Nonetheless, better is needed next year, whether or not Ange Postecoglou remains in charge.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to invest in the upcoming summer transfer window to climb back up the Premier League and are now boosted by being able to offer Champions League football to any targets. One of those could be 22-year-old Simons.

Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Arsenal in Xavi Simons race

Fichajes claims that Spurs are ‘favourites’ to sign the RB Leipzig man, who has also been linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. The outlet claims that Simons has now become a priority for Daniel Levy and Tottenham Hotspur. The German club are set to demand at least €80 million for the player, roughly £67 million.

The report adds that Spurs have indeed bolstered their position in the transfer race thanks to earning a spot in the Champions League next term. Simons has made 33 appearances this season with 11 goals and eight assists.

The midfielder is a product of the Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain youth academies and has also spent time at PSV. He won Ligue 1 with PSG in 2022 and the DFL-Supercup with RB Leipzig in 2023. Simons has won Bundesliga Goal of the Month and Rookie of the Month twice, as well as Eredivisie Talent of the Year in 2023.

Meanwhile, Postecoglou has also given his opinion on rumours that centre-back Cristian Romero could quit the club this summer. The Argentine has been linked with a move to La Liga and only added fuel to those rumours by admitting that he would enjoy a move to the league.

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have been linked with the 27-year-old. Spanish journalist Rubén Uría has claimed in recent weeks that Romero has given the green light to a five-year contract offer from the Spanish outfit with the player himself explicitly outlining his desire to play in La Liga. Shortly after the Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest, quotes shared with Argentine journalist Gastón Edul on his TV show 'Los Edu' started to circulate.

Romero said: “I’d love to play La Liga. I’d love to, honestly. It depends on a lot of things. We’ll see after the [English] championship is over. The truth is, I haven’t spoken to my agent yet, but I’m open to anything. My goal is always to grow and go to new places to continue developing.

“Above all else, I try to take one day at a time. There are two months left until the end of the season and I’m always thinking about performing at my best. We’re in the Europa League semi-finals. It’s an important step for the club which hasn’t reached this stage for so many years. I’d like to win it.”

However, should Postecoglou stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he hopes Romero does too. In a transfer hint to Levy, the Spurs manager said: “I think Romero is absolutely important to keep at this football club.

“You just saw the way he's been in recent games and he hasn't been entirely fit with his toe. The lads respect him highly and he makes them walk taller. For me it's a no brainer with players like him. If he goes who do you replace him with? There aren't a lot of players out there like him. It's very important to keep him and for the long term.”
