Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have experienced the biggest drop-offs when comparing their results to last season, while Nottingham Forest are the Premier League’s most-improved side.
We’ve done some digging and looked at every side in the Premier League, comparing their points and goals tallies after the same number of games played last season, and there are some interesting findings.
For example, title winners Liverpool have only done marginally better than last season, when they finished third. Arne Slot’s side picked up just two more points than last season, but still won the league with games to spare.
Despite Arsenal finishing second for a third consecutive season, they performed considerably worse than last season when taking into consideration their underlying stats.
Mikel Arteta’s side accumulated 15 fewer points than they did last season, along with scoring fewer goals and conceding more.
Manchester City had the chance to make history this season and win five-in-a-row, but it quickly became apparent that Pep Guardiola’s side weren’t quite at the same level. They’ve scored 22 fewer goals and conceded 10 more, suggesting that their issues are at both ends of the pitch.
West Ham and Manchester United have both experienced considerable drop-offs compared to last season, but Tottenham take the biscuit for the Premier League’s most spectacular drop-off in 2024-25.
Ange Postecoglou’s men are a whopping 28 points behind their tally from last season. A wild quirk is that, despite the colossal difference in results, they’ve only actually scored 10 fewer goals and conceded four more than they had in 2023-24.
Everton sit five points ahead of their points tally from last season, but that’s taking into consideration their -8 point deduction. So in reality, they’ve actually picked up the same number of points.
At the other end of the spectrum, there’s no questioning the story of the season. Nottingham Forest are an incredible 33 points better off than they last season. The defence is the key area where they’ve taken great leaps forward, having conceded 21 fewer goals.
