Ipswich Town coach emerges as surprise candidate for Huddersfield Town vacancy

Huddersfield Town endured a disastrous season on their return to League One, finishing 10th and ending the campaign 14 points adrift of the play-offs after losing their final six matches. HTAFC were expected to be in the top six at the bare minimum this year.

The Terriers’ struggles were epitomised by turmoil in the dugout. They dismissed head coach Michael Duff at the start of March, but collected just six points from the subsequent 10 games under interim manager Jon Worthington.

After the season’s end, Huddersfield Town’s search for a new boss has been underway, and a shock name has now been linked. EFL veteran and now Ipswich Town coach Lee Grant is reportedly in the frame for the role, according to Alan Nixon, via his Patreon.

Grant has been part of Kieran McKenna’s backroom staff since 2022. His last club in his playing career was Manchester United, where he also joined the club’s coaching staff at youth level, which was where his relationship with McKenna started.

The Terriers are reportedly considering a move for Grant though. He has wanted to make the move into management for a long time now.

Ruben Selles has been heavily linked, but it seems there remains other contenders.

Very risky move for Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town have been linked with a host of names since the end of the season. This is a massive appointment for HTAFC ahead of a very important season.

The Terriers would be taking a huge risk by going for Grant ahead of this year. It would be an incredibly tough first job in management for him with Huddersfield Town looking to get out of League One.

He does have some good experience in coaching already, but management is a different kettle of fish. It will be interesting to see if HTAFC put the trust in Grant to take them forward.

McKenna the model?

Kieran McKenna joined Ipswich Town with the club in a similar spot to where Huddersfield Town are now. He was also coming into his first job as a head coach.

Three and a half years later, Ipswich Town have just spent a season in the Premier League after back-to-back promotions. He has completely turned the club around after a rough few years for Ipswich.

Huddersfield Town could be trying to emulate that success with Grant. It will be interesting to see how he gets on, should a move materialise.
