Manchester United’s move to sign Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres is ‘almost off the table’ this summer, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed.
The Red Devils were linked with a move for the 'exceptional' Sweden international throughout the season but are now not expected to reunite Gyokeres with Ruben Amorim after failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
According to Plettenberg, a switch to Old Trafford is not Gyokeres’ objective this summer, while Man United are now focused on completing a deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.
Gyokeres is believed to have been one of the main options in Man United’s search for a new number nine, alongside Ipswich Town sensation Liam Delap.
The 26-year-old striker is coming off another incredible season in Portugal, registering 53 goals and 13 assists in 51 appearances for Sporting across all competitions.
Gyokeres is thought to be prioritising a move to a Champions League club this summer, as he is expected to leave Sporting after leading them to two league titles in as many seasons.
The Sweden international, who joined from Coventry in 2023, is likely to be available for a fee in the region of €65m (£55m), which is considerably less than his €100m (£85m) release clause.
Delap, meanwhile, is a much cheaper alternative for the Red Devils, with his relegation release clause at Ipswich set at £30m.
Man United are now close to making Cunha their first signing of the summer, having reached a verbal agreement with all parties over a £62.5m deal.
The Brazilian forward could be announced as United’s new signing as early as this week, with contract details set to be finalised in the coming days.
