Barcelona surpass the 100-goal mark in La Liga for the first time since 2016-17

FC Barcelona took to the field for the last time in the 2024-25 season as they took on Athletic Club at San Mames last night. The Blaugranes won 0-3 in a match in which very little was at stake, as they had already confirmed themselves as the league champions for a few weeks ago.

However, while this game was not going to impact their position on the league table much, there were still some challenges facing the Catalan side in this game.

Barcelona surpass the 100-goal mark

One such challenge was reaching the 100-goal mark in La Liga, something Barcelona had not been able to do so since 2017. As SPORT has noted, the Blaugranes were successful in this challenge, as Robert Lewandowski’s brace and Dani Olmo’s converted penalty took their goal tally for the season to 102 goals.

The Catalans were standing at 99 goals when they came into this game, and Hansi Flick’s men must have the challenge of reaching the century on their minds.

First time since 2016-17

The last time they crossed the 100-goal barrier in a La Liga campaign was back in the 2016-17 season, when the Luis Enrique-led team scored 116 league goals, but was still unable to win the title.

Last season, Barcelona scored 79 goals in La Liga, while in the season before that, in which they won the league with Xavi Hernandez in charge, they scored 70 goals. In the 2021-22 season, the Catalans scored 68 goals.

Between 2016-17 and 2024-25, the closest the Blaugranes came to a 100 goals in La Liga was in the 2017-18 season, when the team scored 99 goals in the league and also won the title.

However, in the two seasons immediately preceding the 2016-17 season, Barcelona had gone beyond 100 league goals, as they scored 112 goals in the 2015-16 season and 110 goals in the 2014-15 season.

Coming back to the current season, it is not really surprising to see the team reach 100 goals in La Liga, keeping in view the attacking style that Hansi Flick has adopted for the team. The Blaugranes scored 4 or more goals in 13 league games this season, and were unable to score in only two matches.

Robert Lewandowski was the team’s top scorer in La Liga with 27 goals, followed by Raphinha (18 goals), Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo (10), and Lamine Yamal (9).
