Viktor Gyokeres was quizzed on his future following Sporting CP's 3-1 victory over Benfica in the Taça de Portugal final. The 26-year-old striker, who continues to be linked with a switch to Arsenal, fired Rui Borges' side to glory on Sunday afternoon, netting an equaliser in the dying embers of stoppage time.
Orkun Kökçü put Benfica ahead shortly after half-time at the Estadio Nacional before Gyokeres pulled one back from 12 yards in the 11th minute of added time. Conrad Harder and Francisco Trincão then fired Sporting into the lead in extra-time, clinching the domestic double for the Lions.
Gyokeres, whose contract at the Jose Alvalade Stadium expires in June 2028, featured seven times in the Taça de Portugal this season, scoring five goals and providing three assists. Speaking to reporters after Sunday's game, the Sweden international was quizzed on his future.
As quoted by The Manchester Evening News, Gyokeres said: "I don't know anything, I tried to focus on the last few games, if something is true, we'll see."
His comments followed an interview with Portuguese TV channel SIC Noticias earlier in the week. Keeping his cards close to his chest, Gyokeres said: "We'll see. It's the future.
"Football is like that, you never know what's going to happen. As we saw this season, you never know what's going to happen. And it's the same thing now. We'll see what the future holds."
Borges also provided an update on Gyokeres' future ahead of the Taça de Portugal final. Speaking to the media, on Saturday, as quoted by the Metro, the Sporting boss said: "He's very happy here.
"He's very connected to the game, he wants to score goals, he's obsessed with it. He's very focused on the final, he knows he had a great season."
Borges added: "He's the best striker in Europe, as the numbers show. He will be attractive, but I believe that if he doesn't leave Sporting, he will remain very committed to the club. He feels very happy here."
On the summer transfer window, the Sporting head coach continued: "I'm sure that a large part of the group will stay. That has been the club's policy in recent years, and the achievements show it.
"It's difficult to guarantee because there are clauses and things that we can't control, but I believe that - if not all - then a large part of the squad will stay for next season."
football.london understands Arsenal are longer-term admirers of Gyokeres - with interest dating back to his spell at Coventry City in the Championship. Despite catching the eye during his first season in Portugal, the Gunners, like many other clubs, decided against making a bid.
The 26-cap Swede has continued his great form this term, making him an attractive option in the summer transfer window. football.london understands that Andrea Berta is reckoned to be a 'big fan', but - as it stands - an official offer hasn't been submitted.
