Newcastle United have opted against triggering the option to extend Callum Wilson's contract, but they have entered talks for a new deal, The Athletic's David Ornstein has confirmed.
Wilson has endured a difficult season with the Magpies, struggling to break into the starting XI due to the form of Alexander Isak. Injuries haven't helped his cause, and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, Newcastle had a decision to make on his future.
Speaking after Newcastle's final game of the season against Everton at the weekend, Eddie Howe said that the club would sit down and talk with his representatives, labelling the striker an 'incredible' footballer.

According to Ornstein, Newcastle have decided against triggering the option to extend Wilson's contract, with his current deal expiring this summer. The Magpies are, however, in talks over a new deal, looking to finalise a more incentive-based contract.
The ball is now in Wilson's court, and he has the chance to decide whether he wants to stay at St James' Park for the 2025/2026 season. Swedish striker Isak has provided 29 goals and assists combined in just 34 Premier League starts this season, meaning it's been tricky for Wilson to find his way into the side.
The 33-year-old centre-forward has started just two Premier League games, playing a total of 370 minutes. With Wilson reportedly earning around £110,000-a-week at St James' Park, it's no surprise that the Magpies are looking to tie him down to a more incentive-based deal, as they aren't getting value for money from him at the moment.
Wilson has been linked with a move away from Newcastle, with newly promoted Leeds United reportedly interested in signing him this summer. Wilson will likely want to be playing regular football, and he's unlikely to get that while Isak remains at Newcastle.
