Newcastle United have opted against taking up the option to extend the contract of Callum Wilson, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
The Englishman is out of contract at the St James’ Park club next month, but there was the option to extend by another 12 months, which the Magpies have refused to activate.
However, Newcastle have entered negotiations about a new deal that is slightly more incentive-based, and the 33-year-old will decide whether he wants to remain at the club or move on.
Injuries limited Wilson to 22 appearances across all competitions this term, with a goal to his name, and while Toons manager Eddie Howe is open to keeping him, the veteran striker may be open to leaving for where he will play regularly having been a cover for Alexander Isak for a while.
He was in fine form last season despite starting just nine times in 20 Premier League appearances, weighing in with nine goals and one assist, and Newcastle could do with his services next season.
Wilson joined the Magpies from Bournemouth in 2020 and has played 130 times, bagging 49 goals and 11 assists.
With Newcastle playing Champions League football next season after finishing fifth in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign, his services and experience could come in handy as Howe needs quality squad depth to successfully navigate the busy season next term.
