Arsenal hold a long-standing interest in Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia which has recently been reignited, with the Gunners poised to make a move in the summer transfer window opening June 1, 2025.
The 24-year-old Spaniard, who has emerged as one of La Liga’s standout shot-stoppers, was reportedly “gutted” when Espanyol rejected Arsenal’s €20m bid last summer, having agreed personal terms and packed his bags for the Emirates.
Despite the setback, Arsenal remain frontrunners to sign Garcia, who is seen as the ideal challenger to David Raya.

Garcia’s stellar 2024/25 La Liga campaign, where he kept seven clean sheets and boasted a 73.4% save percentage, has drawn interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid, Aston Villa, and Newcastle.
His €25m release clause, which could rise to €30m if he earns a Spain call-up for the UEFA Nations League, makes him an attractive target. However, Espanyol’s financial woes could see them accept as little as €15m (£12.6m) before June 30 to balance their books, giving Arsenal a chance to secure a bargain.
Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta view Garcia as more than a backup, with the potential to push Raya for the No. 1 spot. Garcia’s shot-stopping ability, evidenced by preventing 8.5 goals above expected, aligns with Arsenal’s need for a modern goalkeeper capable of playing out from the back.

Despite Barcelona’s interest in replacing Wojciech Szczesny and Newcastle’s reported proximity to a deal, Arsenal’s prior agreement with Garcia gives them an edge.
The player’s disappointment last summer fuels his desire to join Arsenal, where he sees a chance to compete at the highest level in the Premier League and Champions League.
With Espanyol’s survival in La Liga uncertain, Garcia’s focus remains on a potential move. Arsenal fans are eager for the club to act swiftly, hopeful that Garcia’s arrival will solidify their goalkeeping ranks for a title push.
