A railway station in Manchester has issued a warning over 'unprecedented' numbers of people travelling to Liverpool on Bank Holiday Monday for the football club's trophy parade.

Hundreds of thousands of Liverpool FC supporters are expected to line the city's streets today when the parade takes place.

And, it appears, many are heading for Liverpool from Manchester.

Manchester Piccadilly reported 'unprecedented demand' to travel to Liverpool from the railway station. Queues to get on platforms, meanwhile, are also being reported.

In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, Manchester Piccadilly said: "Due to unprecedented demand to travel to Liverpool for the Liverpool FC trophy parade, passengers are only being allowed onto the platform when there is safe capacity to do so.

" Please bear with us and work with station staff while we try and get you safely to a your train. Thank you."

Images being shared on X showed many hundreds of fans at Piccadilly waiting for trains. One reported the station was 'absolutely packed' with Liverpool fans.

A second Liverpool championship in five years, and the first to be lifted in front of supporters since 1990 due to Covid restrictions in 2020, was celebrated wildly inside and outside of Anfield following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

The parade - which features an open-top bus - will start at 2.30pm at Allerton Maze and travel a 15km route before driving along The Strand to finish.

Fans have been encouraged to arrive early and plan their journeys in advance. Liverpool Lime Street station, meanwhile, also reported on X being 'extremely busy', with queuing systems said to be in place.

Paul Cuttill, vice president of stadium operations for Liverpool FC, said: "All of us here at the club want a safe parade that everyone can enjoy and be able to see the joy on the faces of the fans as the victory bus makes its way across the city.

"Let’s make this a day to remember for everyone involved."

Liverpool have now won as many top-flight league titles as Manchester United have - 20.
