Manchester United’s pursuit of Liam Delap this summer has accelerated, with Rúben Amorim keen to bring in a new striker as soon as possible.
Manchester United are set for a major attacking overhaul this summer as they target fresh striker options to boost their underperforming front line.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford have been the only consistent scorers in recent seasons—Fernandes with 19 goals this term and Rashford netting 30 last year under Erik ten Hag.
But with Rashford expected to depart and United open to selling both Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund for a combined £100 million, the need for reinforcements is clear.
A £62.5 million deal for Matheus Cunha is expected to be completed later this month, while the club are also working on a £30 million move for Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap and plan to bring in a third attacker before the window closes.
United’s deal for Gyökeres now in jeopardy
With United wanting to bring in a new striker in the coming weeks, they have also been heavily linked with a move for Sporting CP gunman Viktor Gyökeres, who scored a stunning 66 goals in 68 appearances under Amorim.
However, fresh reports from Germany have thrown this deal into significant doubt, with it now looking likely that the Swedish international will not sign at Old Trafford this summer.
According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, a move that would see United enter the race for the 26-year-old is now “almost off the table” as he is not their primary objective.
As for the player’s stance, he is also not considering a move to United to reunite with his former coach, despite Amorim wanting the club to sign a more experienced striker this summer.
Delap transfer timeline is accelerating
Amid the news that Gyökeres is unlikely to land at Old Trafford this summer, the saga surrounding Delap’s pending move from Ipswich is gaining traction.
Although it was initially stated that he would want to make his decision prior to jetting off with England’s U21s next month, journalist Ben Jacobs has now claimed that the 22-year-old will instead make his decision this week, accelerating his transfer timeline.
Jacobs has explained that, although European football was seen as an important part of any package proposed to him, United’s new stance is that they feel they still issued a strong case despite their lack of playing in the Europa League next season.
Liam Delap is expected to decide his future this week before heading off to the Under-21 Euros. He remains Manchester United’s top choice.
Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton have also all held talks.

Delap is said to want a guarantee on the number of minutes he plays in the coming campaign as he wants to boost his chances of making the 2026 World Cup squad with England.
The striker has not just held talks with United, but also Newcastle, Everton, and Chelsea, who are all keen to land the player.
