Manchester United are set to attack the transfer market after sealing Matheus Cunha’s move and the next on the agenda is a striker, with Viktor Gyokeres an ever-present name.
After scoring for Sporting in their last game of the season and winning the league title again, Viktor Gyokeres has 80(!) goals and assists in 57 games across all competitions.
On the surface, he’s just the player who would be perfect for Man Utd, especially under the manager who engineered his breakout in Portugal.
Gyokeres has now broken his silence over a potential summer move, while United have received clarity via reports on the player’s intention.

Viktor Gyokeres on summer transfer
It is a matter of who Gyokeres leaves Sporting for in the summer, rather than if he leaves the club at all.
He has an understanding with the club that he will be sold for about €65 million, a ridiculous bargain considering his scoring record and age profile.
Naturally, United’s links to Gyokeres have been strong due to the need for a striker and Ruben Amorim being at the helm of the club.
However, Gyokeres will have the pick of the clubs in the summer so it would be quite a coup if United manage to get him despite being in no European competitions next season.

The player himself remained tight-lipped when asked about a potential summer move, leaving the door open but without any firm response.
He said: “I don’t know anything, I tried to focus on the last few games, if something is true, we’ll see. We’ll see. It’s the future. Football is like that, you never know what’s going to happen.
“As we saw this season, you never know what’s going to happen. And it’s the same thing now. We’ll see what the future holds.”

Man Utd given clarity over Gyokeres transfer
Meanwhile, as more clubs get into the race to sign Gyokeres, United were handed a blow when they lost the UEL final to Spurs.
Arsenal have been linked to Gyokeres and they will have UCL football on offer, along with a club that is in a settled place and closer to competing than United look right now.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Man Utd’s move for Gyokeres is “off the table” as things stand right now.
As per Plettenberg, the decline is mutual, with the club focusing on Matheus Cunha, and potentially Liam Delap to follow, while Gyokeres isn’t too keen either.
These remain just reports and there has been no inkling from either party that this is the case but at this point, it would be a surprise if United signed him.
Utd’s links to Delap are gaining pace and for where they are in their project right now, Delap matches the timeline much more than Gyokeres, who will enter the trophy-chasing part of his career.
Looks like there will be no dream reunion of the former Sporting pair at Old Trafford.
