A United statement hailed Evans for "serving United with distinction for more than a decade as a senior player, across two spells at the club".
However, the former Northern Ireland international is expected to pull on the famous red jersey once more later this week.
United will round-off the season with a much-criticised tour of Asia with a game against Asean All Stars in China on Wednesday, followed by a clash with a Hong Kong XI on Friday. Evans has been named in the 32-man squad for the two-match tour.
What the future holds for the defender beyond this trip is unknown. The man who won 107 caps for Northern Ireland has not confirmed whether he plans to retire this summer, with Championship club Wrexham one of several teams linked with his signature.
