Florian Wirtz could be about to take the shirt number of a Liverpool Champions League hero if he joins - opinion

With Liverpool’s successful 2024/25 season now a thing of the past, all eyes are on the future at Anfield.

Supporters will certainly enjoy their summers and will toast the champions one last time during an open-top bus parade through the city on Monday.

But, behind the scenes, work is already being done to ensure Liverpool are well placed to go again next season.

The dust has barely settled on Liverpool’s Premier League trophy lift on Sunday, and it already looks as though the Reds are making some massive moves in the transfer market.

The biggest of these is their attempt to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool submitted their first official bid for Wirtz on Monday and are attempting to pull off a brilliant transfer coup.

And as the German edges ever closer to Anfield, it is well worth looking at what shirt number he could take once he arrives. Wirtz wears No. 10 for Leverkusen, but with Alexis Mac Allister unlikely to give his shirt up, there are some clues to what the 22-year-old could choose instead.

Florian Wirtz could pick Divock Origi’s old number

Wirtz is very much a number 10 both in name and positionally. In an ideal world, that would likely be the number he would choose after completing an enormous move to Liverpool.

However, Mac Allister is one of Liverpool’s most important players and retains the right to keep it for himself.

As a result, it’s worth looking back at Wirtz’s history at Leverkusen to get an idea of the route he could go down instead.

Although he has worn the No. 10 for the past two seasons at the BayArena, Wirtz initially broke into the team with No. 27 on his back.

That’s the way it stayed for four seasons, before the Germany international settled into a slightly more fitting number in 2023.

At Liverpool, the No. 27 is currently free, having last been worn by Darwin Nunez during the 2022/23 campaign.

Prior to that, Divock Origi wore the number which much more distinction, writing himself into Liverpool history with a Champions League semi-final double in 2019 and a clinching goal in the final against Tottenham. If Wirtz can match Origi’s legacy, he’ll be doing very well indeed.

Liverpool submit bid for Wirtz

Wirtz may need to quicken his decision over which number he will wear at Liverpool as the wheels of the transfer continue to turn.

There was a new update on Monday morning, as journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Reds have made an offer of around £84m to Leverkusen.
