Newcastle United make Callum Wilson contract decision amid Leeds United transfer talk

Newcastle United will not be taking up the option in Callum Wilson's contract to extend his stay at St. James' Park amid ongoing transfer speculation linking him with a move to Leeds United.

Daniel Farke's side are expected to strengthen their forward line this summer in an attempt to stay in the top-flight next season, with the 33-year-old England international one striker to have been linked with the Whites.

However, The Athletic claims that Newcastle have entered talks with Wilson over a new deal which will be more incentive based given his recent battle with injuries.

The striker will have to make a decision whether he stays at St. James' Park in the coming weeks, with his existing contract set to expire at the end of June.

Wilson has made 129 appearances for the Magpies since joining the club from Bournemouth, scoring 49 goals in a black and white shirt, but has had to play second fiddle to Alexander Isak in the last two seasons.

This season was a disappointing one, in terms of his goals scored, failing to find the back of the net in his 18 league outings, having scored nine goals in 20 games in 2023-24 on the back of 18 goals in 2022-23, finishing as the Premier League's fifth highest goal-scorer guiding the Magpies back into the Champions League.

However, injuries have hampered his time at St. James' Park and - with his contract now running down - Wilson cut an emotional figure at full-time on the final day, appearing to wave farewell to the Newcastle fans.

"Let's wait and see, we're going to sit down and talk with his representatives," Magpies' manager Eddie Howe said during his post-match news conference. "What I can say is Callum is, and has been, just an incredible footballer for Newcastle. Someone who epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are.

"He is really professional and brave. I mean to come here and be the No.9 in the manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult moment, the club needed hope and Callum gave them hope and led the line with the responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well.

"He brings a positivity to the group, he's a leader within the changing room, he's been incredible.

"Let's just wait and see what happens. It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters, there's still so much respect there between the two."
