Florian Wirtz’s nine-word comment about wage said it all after transfer was confirmed

In a past interview with Sports Illustrated Germany, Wirtz opened up about his decision to leave childhood club FC Cologne for Leverkusen in 2018, when he was only 15 years old. He said: “I didn’t think about my salary for a second.”

In full, the German, who has 29 international caps for his country, said: "When I moved from Cologne to Leverkusen, I didn't think about my salary for a single second, but only about what was best for my career. I don't even think about how much money I have in my account or what I could earn in the future. Of course, you should make sure you get a good contract. But for me, the sporting perspective is much more important than the money.

"I think my parents would be angry if I were too fixated on money. After I moved to Leverkusen at 16, my parents managed my salary and sent me 150 euros a month. That shaped me. It was important to my parents that I didn't do anything stupid with my salary."

It's clear that he is more motivated by trophies than financial reward. With that in mind, Arne Slot's side's Premier League title triumph may have gone some way to convincing Wirtz to choose Anfield.

The midfielder, according to talkSPORT, has agreed personal terms with the Reds. Moreover, Fabrizio Romano also claimed Liverpool have tabled a bid that is in excess of €100m (£84m).

This revelation follows Bayern Munich conceding their chase for Wirtz, with Bayern president Herbert Hainer recently saying at a fan festival: "Max Eberl [director of sport] informed me that Florian Wirtz is probably leaning towards Liverpool. I can't say how things will transpire with Leverkusen."

Wirtz is valued at an eye-watering £125m by the Bundesliga outfit. If secured, it would eclipse the record Premier League transfer sum of £115m paid by Chelsea for Caicedo in 2023.

He dazzled throughout the season at Leverkusen, delivering 16 goals alongside 15 assists over 45 matches. Moreover, his stunning contribution of 18 goals and 20 assists the previous campaign was also instrumental in Leverkusen capturing their inaugural Bundesliga crown without losing a single match.
