Kalvin Phillips has spoken of his frustration following an injury-hit campaign with Ipswich Town. The former Leeds United star headed to Portman Road back in August, having found himself surplus to requirements at Manchester City.
But the 29-year-old, who endured a disappointing loan spell with West Ham United last season, was unable to prevent the Tractor Boys from avoiding relegation. Kieran McKenna's team finished 19th in the table, with Phillips restricted to 14 Premier League starts. His final appearance for Town came in their 2-2 draw at Everton on May 3.
Phillips has bid a fond farewell to the Tractor Boys following their final day defeat to West Ham. He posted on his Instagram account: "A frustrating end to a tough season. I just wanted to say thank you @IpswichTown.
"Thank you to the fans for making me and my family feel so loved after a difficult two years. Thank you to the staff and players, an unbelievable group that I loved being around every day.
"And a special thanks to the manager; a great manager but also a great person, who helped me on and off the pitch in so many ways. He made me believe in myself again.
"I have no doubt Ipswich will be back where they belong very soon and I wish everyone at the club all the best."
City forked out £45m to sign Phillips from United in the summer of 2022. However, the England international has struggled for form, fitness and to adapt to Pep Guardiola’s demands.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Phillips. The midfielder has three years left to run on his current City contract.
There has been talk of Phillips returning to Elland Road, although his hefty salary could be a stumbling block in a potential deal. McKenna, meanwhile, remains coy over the possibility of Phillips extending his Town stay.
Speaking earlier this month, McKenna said: “I’ve had very few conversations with many of the players about next year. Those conversations will take place maybe a little bit next week, certainly the few days after the season finishes. We’ll see what comes.”
