Manchester United are looking to sign another one of Newcastle United’s top transfer targets despite seemingly winning the race for Matheus Cunha.
Newcastle United were left thanking Manchester United on Sunday after Ruben Amorim’s side defeated Aston Villa to save the Toon’s bacon.
Eddie Howe’s team lost their crucial final game to Everton, but Villa’s controversial loss meant Newcastle still finished above them in a Champions League spot.
Dan Burn was left baffled by Man Utd doing them a favour, while Howe got revenge on Villa after a controversial refereeing decision relegated his Bournemouth side instead of the Villains in 2020.
Yet, Newcastle’s gratitude to the Red Devils is unlikely to last throughout the summer transfer window.
Newcastle have already seemingly lost out to Man Utd in the chase for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who has reportedly settled on a move to Old Trafford.
However, the Manchester side are reportedly not finished there and still want to sign another top Newcastle target in Bryan Mbeumo this summer, too.

Man Utd still want Bryan Mbeumo despite Matheus Cunha signing
Mbeumo has enjoyed a standout season with Brentford, scoring 20 goals and laying on eight assists.

Only Mohamed Salah, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland finished the campaign with more goals than the versatile forward, making it obvious why Howe wants Mbeumo in his squad.
Thomas Frank hasn’t sounded confident of keeping Mbeumo for next season, with a £54m fee reportedly enough to sign him.
However, Newcastle aren’t the only interested party and reports suggest Man Utd are still interested in Mbeumo despite closing in on fellow forward Cunha.
Manchester World reports that Mbeumo is seen as ‘another ideal addition to the squad alongside Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha.’
It’d added that the expected sale of Alejandro Garnacho, after being told he can leave the club, will fund the deal.
Maybe that’s where Newcastle can take advantage.
Newcastle United should try and sign Alejandro Garnacho
Hopefully, Newcastle’s position as a Champions League club and Man Utd’s as a fallen giant that remains in an utter mess will convince Mbeumo to choose the North East.
Yet, Man Utd’s name still holds some clout despite their best efforts to diminish it completely. Newcastle could lose out on Mbeumo.
If they do, then perhaps they should sign Garnacho themselves.
There might be hesitancy to, in effect, fund Man U’s move for Mbeumo and there are concerns over Garnacho’s attitude.
However, it’s hard to judge a player’s conduct at Man Utd, given so many have had their ‘attitude’ questioned, departed Old Trafford and seen their careers instantly improve.
Marcus Rashford and Antony this season alone.
It’s not even as if Garnacho has been underperforming. The Argentine registered 21 goal contributions this past season and did more in 20 minutes in the Europa League final defeat than anyone else.
Garnacho is still just 20 and has sky-high potential. He has been one of Man U’s few good performers in the last two years and if Newcastle can sign him at a discount, then they should bite their hand off.
