From hero to zero?: We need to talk about Anthony Gordon's Newcastle United future

ยท 26 May 2025, 14:30

**Anthony Gordon was a bona fide Newcastle United hero last season after putting in some absolutely stunning performances and contributing with goals and assists regularly. However, this season, it has not really clicked.**

Football fans are fickle by nature and can turn on a player at the drop of a hat, but it hasn't really been like that in Anthony Gordon's case, as his decline has been more steady.

Gordon started the season poorly, but fans gave him the benefit of the doubt. He'd hardly had any chance to rest between seasons, indeed, the last three seasons, so he'd have been pretty tapped out.

Also, there was a lot of speculation around his future, which apparently distracted him enough while on England duty that Gareth Southgate overlooked him for pretty much all of the European Championships.

Some Newcastle United fans are convinced Anthony Gordon wants away from the club

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All of that will have taken a pretty big toll on the lad, mentally and physically. Gordon even admitted that he'd not been playing to his usual standards.

We were all just waiting for it to click for him again, but it never really did. Of course, he had a couple of good games here and there, contributed to the cause with some goals and assists, but he never hit the heights of the previous season.

Fans have been quick to point to his body language and an apparent lack of effort, and as such have massively turned on the former Everton man, with some fans saying they'd happily give him a lift to Liverpool if that's where his head's at.

I'm willing to give Anthony Gordon another shot

-----------------------------------------------

While I 100% understand the frustration, and I am by no means defending his performances or indeed his attitude this season, I will say that I feel it's too soon to be writing him off.

With no international tournament this summer, hopefully he'll get a good rest before returning for next season, he can get his head on straight and get back to the player we all know he can be.

I'm not convinced he wants out of the club. There could be a million other reasons why he's been off his game this season. I'm prepared to give him another chance, and I think we all owe him that.

That being said, if he starts next season like he did this year, my patience will run out pretty quickly.
