Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, edging out Premier League side Arsenal in the race for the highly rated shot-stopper, according to reports from Spain.

Spanish outletAS claims that the La Liga giants are ready to activate the €25 million release clause in Garcia’s contract, a figure that could rise to €30m if the 24-year-old is included in Spain’s next UEFA Nations League squad.

Garcia, who broke into Espanyol’s first team in 2021, has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in La Liga. He was a standout performer in the recently concluded season, making 146 saves – the most in the division – and playing a crucial role in helping Espanyol narrowly avoid relegation.

Arsenal had reportedly agreed personal terms with Garcia last summer but failed to finalise a move after refusing to meet Espanyol’s asking price. Despite renewing their interest, the Gunners have now been beaten to the punch by Barcelona, who have moved quickly to secure the Olympic gold medallist.

While Garcia is eager for regular first-team football, Barcelona already have Marc-André ter Stegen as their first-choice keeper. The plan, therefore, is to loan Garcia out for the 2025/26 season, with Real Betis and Valencia among the clubs interested in a temporary deal.

The move is part of Barcelona’s efforts to support new head coach Hansi Flick, who led the club to three trophies in his debut campaign and is keen to bolster squad depth ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have turned their attention to a familiar face, with reports suggesting they are considering a surprise move to re-sign former goalkeeperEmiliano Martinez. The Argentine left the Gunners in 2020 to join Aston Villa, where he has since made over 200 appearances and become one of the Premier League’s standout goalkeepers.

Martinez has also enjoyed significant international success, playing a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory and back-to-back Copa America titles. His future at Villa, however, is uncertain after he appeared emotional during the club’s recent 2-0 win over Tottenham, sparking rumours of a summer exit.

According to reports, the 32-year-old has received three offers ahead of the transfer window, with Arsenal now exploring a potential return as they brace for the possible departure of current No. 1 David Raya. Both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in the Spaniard, and while Arsenal only recently made his loan from Brentford permanent, they are said to be open to a sale if the right offer is made.
