‘Thank you’ - Bruno Guimaraes dad drops hint on son’s future at Newcastle United

Bruno Guimaraes started all 38 Premier League games as Newcastle United qualified for the Champions League.

Bruno Guimaraes’ dad thanked the Newcastle United supporters for making his family feel “very special” after securing Champions League football.

The former taxi driver also paid tribute to his son - the inspirational Toon captain - in a way that suggests he is not going anywhere. While speculation around the midfielder’s future persisted last season, a focused Guimaraes ignored the noise and prepared for the 2024-25 campaign.

Eddie Howe handed the Brazilian the armband - a hot topic earlier this season. Many questioned whether Guimaraes had the maturity or temperament to be a Newcastle captain.

However, the 27-year-old has shut down those naysayers tenfold to help deliver Newcastle’s best season in living memory. The Magpies ended a 70-year domestic trophy drought before weaponising the feel-good factor to launch an assault on Champions League football.

Seven wins and a draw from the final 11 games proved enough - just - to get Newcastle over the line. Back-to-back 1-0 defeats rounded off the season with a limp but there were few complaints at the full-time whistle.

Bruno Guimaraes is going nowhere

Posting on social media, Guimaraes’ dad, Dick, who has become a local celebrity around Tyneside, emotionally thanked the Toon support. He wrote: “This affection that Newcastle fans have for my son and my family is very special. I love Newcastle! Thank you my son Bruno for all this. Let’s go Champions League!”

Bruno Guimaraes reviews Newcastle United’s season

“I feel very well, I feels unbelievable. I think for me, it has been an unbelievable year. First year as a captain, played 38 of 38 games in the Premier League. I’m very, very happy.

“Winning a trophy for this club… what a season. I will always remember this one. I’m very, very happy and proud of our team, of myself, of these fans. Next season, we go back again. We never stop. We’ve won a cup, but we want more.”

Eddie Howe on Newcastle United transfer plans

Howe revealed post-match he was set to meet Yasir Al-Rumayyan immediately to discuss transfer plans. He said: “As far as I’m aware, we do not have any PSR issues heading into this deadline.

“Now, I have to put a caveat in there because I’m not seeing the figures, I’m only relaying what I’m getting told. But I think we’re in a much healthier position and a lot stronger position than we were at this time last year. We’re looking to reverse what we did last summer. This time, we’re in a strong position ourselves where we’ll be looking to make additions to the squad.

“I will have a discussion with the chairman and representatives from PIF today, and I’m looking forward to that. We’ll be trying to lay some foundations for what lies ahead in the summer.

“In terms of timings and everything that follows that, I don’t know, but the planning and all the things that go on behind the scenes have been there for a number of weeks now. We’ve been working hard to try to set things up for what we need to do.”
