Manchester United have been urged to sign an “outstanding” striker this summer after a deal to sign Viktor Gyökeres has fallen through.
Manchester United are aiming to sign a new first-choice striker this summer after Rasmus Højlund has failed to impress Rúben Amorim up front.
Højlund ended up netting just ten strikes this season, four coming in the Premier League, despite playing 52 fixtures for United up front, leading to United’s pursuit of fresh talent.
The club have been closely linked with a move for Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, with United holding talks with the player amid his £30 million release clause this summer, but face competition from Chelsea, Newcastle, and Everton.
Meanwhile, they are set to strike a deal to sign Matheus Cunha this week for a £62.5 million fee from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and have recently engaged in talks to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
United’s talks for Gyökeres have collapsed
Another name United have been closely linked to in the last month is Viktor Gyökeres, who scored a stunning 66 goals in 68 appearances under Amorim during their time together at Sporting CP.
However, the latest reports from Sky Germany have confirmed that the Swede will likely not be signing for United this summer.
It is claimed that the 26-year-old is not part of United’s summer transfer plans, and the player is also not pushing to re-sign for Amorim amid interest from other parties such as Arsenal and Juventus.
United will also learn the outcome of Delap’s decision regarding which club he wants to sign for next later this week, with the 22-year-old keen to have his future finalised before he flies off to compete in the U21 European Championships with England.
United urged to reconsider signing Osimhen this summer
Amid United’s need for a new striker, former Old Trafford striker and club legend Teddy Sheringham has urged Amorim to reconsider signing “outstanding” Victor Osimhen this summer.
Osimhen is considered a player available for between £50-60 million from Napoli this summer, with 150 career goals to his name. Still, United have shown reservations concerning securing the Nigerian international due to his excessive wage demands.
“I think Osimhen’s an outstanding player, and any one of those clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United – would doubtless be looking to sign him. He would enhance all of those teams,” Sherringham said.

“For Manchester United, if it came down to Osimhen or Liam Delap, I think that United should plump for Osimhen at this moment. They need leaders in their club right now, they don’t need too many young players who are still hoping to prove themselves at the top level.
“Delap has been very good this season, no question, but in many respects he’s untried and untested, especially at the top level.
“I would go for an experienced player rather than another younger player. It would be the same as Rasmus Højlund, or Joshua Zirzkee, who is a little older but still inexperienced. They need leaders right now. They need guarantees, not potential.”
