Liverpool fans haven't forgiven Trent Alexander-Arnold - and prove it with response to leaving post

Trent Alexander-Arnold may have been in tears on the Anfield pitch following his final appearance for Liverpool, but that did not alter how some Reds fans are feeling about the defender's departure.

It's been three weeks since Alexander-Arnold confirmed he would be leaving the club at the end of the season, and on his next outing he was subjected to boos as he emerged as a second-half substitute against Arsenal at Anfield.

In the Reds' next game, he was an unused substitute as the team lost to Brighton, and there was uncertainty over whether he would be afforded a farewell appearance in Liverpool's final game of the season against Crystal Palace.

He did not start against Palace, but received a warm reception after coming on as a half-time substitute, and was given a huge cheer as he went up to collect his league winner's medal.

Alexander-Arnold took to social media on Monday, sharing pictures from Liverpool's celebration at Anfield alongside the caption: "Fairytale ending." After feeling the love from the fans inside Anfield 24 hours earlier, Alexander-Arnold received plenty of negative replies from Liverpool supporters on X.

One of them shared an AI image of Alexander-Arnold and Michael Owen, but with their noses replaced by rats' noses and whiskers, while another brutally wrote: "Thank you for your service. You will be forgotten." A third wrote: "As a Liverpool fan I couldn’t care less in few years time no one will remember you at Liverpool"

Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool lifted the trophy at Anfield on Sunday, Alexander-Arnold said: "I didn't know what to expect stepping out at Anfield today after what happened a few weeks ago but I wanted to play for the club one more time, and I said that to the manager and he trusted me to go in at half-time.

"To get the reception that I got means more than anything to me. I've played hundreds of games for the club but I've never felt more loved and more cared for than today.

"From the bottom of my heart, I hope that one day, the fans and supporters of this club are able to recognize the hard work and everything that I've done for the team, because there wasn't a day, a minute or a second that I didn't think about the team, from six years old to 26 years old.

"Twenty years is a very, very long time, but I've loved every single minute of it. The ups and the downs, coming through the academy to the first team, and then being part of the first team properly. It's been an honor and a privilege for me to be part of this club."
