The Dallas Mavericks entered the 2024-25 NBA season hoping to improve on a campaign that saw the franchise reach the NBA Finals for the first time since winning the championship in 2011. However, their season ended in disappointment, finishing with a 35-47 record and missing the playoffs. The season was marred by significant roster changes and injuries.
Luka Doncic, the face of the franchise for years, was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in February in exchange for Anthony Davis. Shortly thereafter, Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending ACL tear in his left knee during a game against the Sacramento Kings, further depleting the Mavericks' backcourt and derailing their postseason aspirations.

As a result of these setbacks, particularly Irving's injury absence, Mavericks are reportedly exploring options to enhance their backcourt. One prominent name that has emerged in trade discussions is Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, "League sources say Dallas is expected to at least explore whether there are any feasible trade pathways to Boston's Jrue Holiday — complicated as that would likely be given the three years and $104 million still left on Holiday's contract — while also maintaining an interest in a far more reasonable trade target."
Acquiring Jrue Holiday makes sense for the Mavericks, as he aligns with GM Nico Harrison's emphasis on defense, which reportedly led to the franchise trading Doncic. Holiday would bring a wealth of experience and defensive stability to the Mavericks.
A two-time NBA champion with the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics, the veteran guard has earned two All-Star selections, with six NBA All-Defensive Team honors to his name. He also secured gold medals with Team USA in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. His two-way play could provide the competitiveness the Mavericks seek as they aim to return to playoff contention in the upcoming season.
