“I would love to finish my career here” – Newcastle hero moves closer to Toon wish

It wouldn’t be far fetched to say that this past season has been perhaps the best of Dan Burn’s career.

A rock in the heart of our defence, Burn’s opening goal in the Carabao Cup final and call up to the England National Team under Thomas Tuchel has seen him rise to become one of the most dependable defenders not only in our team, but in the Premier League as a whole.

And having now signed a contract extension until 2027, the boy from Blyth had said shed some light on how he wants the rest of his career to pan out.

In an interview conducted by the club, Burn expressed a strong desire to see out the rest of his playing days at his boyhood club.

Burn will be 35-years-old once his new deal comes to an end, and spending his twilight years at the Toon seems like the perfect end to his career.

“I’m delighted to sign a new deal here. I knew that I was going into my last year and I really wanted to get my future tied down. I’ve said before that I would love to finish my career here so to be given that opportunity, I’m very grateful.”

Even at 33-years-old, Burn’s performances have only been getting better and better, and it would come as no surprise to see him and Sven Botman spend much of next season as our starting centre back duo.

“I still feel like I’m getting better and I don’t feel that I’ve hit the top of the hill yet. It’ll be tough to top this season but hopefully we can do that over the next couple of years.”

“It’s a dream come true to be playing for this club and I’m delighted that I get to keep doing it.”

Burn was one of the first signings Eddie Howe made upon his appointment back in the 2021/22 season, as one of the more senior players in our side, it’s no surprise how much Howe values the former Brighton and Fulham defender’s traits and quality.

Reacting to his new deal until 2027, Howe said: “Dan has had an incredible season. He has been a key part of our most memorable moments and has rightly been rewarded with senior international football.

“He is a leader who epitomises the attitude and commitment we want, and I’m delighted he’ll be staying with us for even longer.”

Having amassed over 100 appearances for us under Howe, Burn can be expected to be one of our senior figures, alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier, heading into next season’s European football exploits.

And even with a new centre back at the top of our transfer list this summer, Sporting Director Paul Mitchell was also keen to express his immense gratitude for the job Burn’s done in defence since he joined.

“This is an acknowledgement of Dan’s continued importance to the team”, Mitchell said.

“He makes an exceptional contribution to the club on and off the pitch, and it’s very pleasing to see his efforts rewarded with a wonderful season for club and country and an extended contract.”
