The Merseyside Police have released a statement after detaining the man who plowed into a crowd of Liverpool fans who were celebrating winning the Premier League title.
The statement from the police read, "We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city center. We were contacted at just after 6 pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them."
The statement followed helicopter footage that displayed an overhead view of the streets, first responders, and several medical vehicles navigating a compact area on Water Street. Hotel viewers were able to capture footage of the vehicle that drove into the public crowds.
Footage showed a black SUV driving down the road and hitting at least two people before forcing its way deeper into a larger crowd of supporters dressed in red. The car continued its path and struck a group of over 20 pedestrians before coming to a stop in the middle of the street with people still trapped underneath.
The crowd and law officials surrounded the car to detain the man during the parade. Bystanders at the scene reported a barrier set up by the police on Water Street, advising people to stay away from the area.
Reporters on the corner of Dale and Water Street disclosed numerous targets of the crime were receiving quick medical treatment after being attacked. The Riva Blu Italian Restaurant & Bar on Castle Street was reportedly turned into a makeshift emergency center to care for those needing treatment.
The Liverpool parade was announced as covering 10 miles of city grounds for the club. Merseyside Police issued a safety warning before the event on X, urging Reds supporters not to climb any building structures or street furniture during the festivities. Brunswick Street, Water Street, and James Street were all closed due to overcrowding.
Liverpool City Council publicized that they would work with the police on the case.
