Italian restaurant Riva Blu is being used as a makeshift ER after a driver plowed into a crowd of fans celebrating the Premier League title win.
On Monday, Liverpool FC celebrated their Premier League title win - a 20th first division title, tying Manchester United for the most in English football - with a parade on the streets of the city. However, the jubilant atmosphere was decimated by a car driving through hordes of fans.
The car reportedly collided with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male was detained, but a number of people were left injured.
Several people received medical treatment inside restaurant Riva Blue, which has been turned into a makeshift emergency room to deal with the incident. Riva Blu traditionally serves Italian cuisine, but has evolved to assist the tragic scene with paramedics treating victims.
Some people were seen with bandages around their heads and limbs, while Riva staff appeared to be providing fluids to those being treated and the emergency services.
The Liverpool Ambulance Service released a statement after the Merseyside Police detained a man. A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service stated: “NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city center, following reports of a road traffic collision.
“We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.
“Updates will be published on this page and Mersey Police as we know more.”
The incident happened as thousands of fans lined the streets of the city to celebrate Liverpool's Premier League title victory. The Premier League season ended on Sunday, with Arne Slot's team securing a draw with Crystal Palace to finish on 84 points.
But this tragic moment has threatened to mar celebrations. Natasha Rinaldi witnessed the incident as she was watching the parade from her friend's living room window when they “heard some screams.“
“It was so loud,“ Rinaldi told Sky News. “People sounded desperate. And then we looked at the window and we saw the car [had] run over people. Then people started rushing to go after the driver and they tried to break the car. The police did everything to block and to push people away.
“We could just hear screams and screams. We were very confused. Some of my friends were down there and the car was so near them. It was a horrible scene, nobody was expecting it.“
