When the [Green Bay Packers](https://totalpackers.com) selected former TCU wide receiver Savion Williams in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, it was a move that some looked past. Matthew Golden being the team’s first round pick at No. 23 overall received most of the hype, but Williams will have a chance to be a high-impact addition as well.
More than likely, Williams will not receive nearly as big of a role as Golden right off the bat, but his skill-set gives head coach Matt LaFleur something that he has needed.
During his college career, Williams played a hybrid role. He made plays as both a wide receiver and a running back.
In 2024 with the Horned Frogs, Williams racked up 60 receptions for 611 yards and six touchdowns as a wide receiver. He also chipped in with 51 carries for 322 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.
Entering his rookie season, the 23-year-old offensive weapon has received a stunning comparison.
[Patrick Holleron of Lombardi Ave](https://lombardiave.com/matt-lafleur-quietly-found-deebo-samuel-packers-offense) has suggested that Williams could be the Packers’ version of Deebo Samuel. Of course, Samuel was a huge piece of the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive success in recent years. Samuel was traded by the 49ers this offseason to the Washington Commanders.
“With all of this said, Williams likely won’t be featured as heavily in the Packers offense (at least initially), given that Reed, Romeo Doubs, Watson (when healthy), and fellow rookie receiver Matthew Golden sit atop the depth chart. As for the run game, a certain guy named Josh Jacobs is still going to be the bell cow,” Holleron wrote. “He will do a bit of everything in LaFleur’s offense to keep a defense on its feet with his own twist on the hybrid receiver aspect of the Kyle Shanahan/Sean McVay system.”
Bringing in more weapons for Jordan Love was a clear priority for Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay front office. Both Golden and Williams will be valuable long-term pieces of the offense if they reach their full potential.
Williams, in particular, will be interesting to watch develop. If he can become the kind of impact player within the offense that Samuel was for San Francisco, the Packers will have gotten a massive steal in the third round of the 2025 draft.
