BREAKING: Keir Starmer responds to Liverpool parade incident after car plows into crowd

Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has described the horrifying scenes that unfolded during Liverpool's Premier League title-winning parade as "appalling".

Sunday saw Arne Slot's Reds parade the Premier League trophy through the streets of Liverpool amidst a red haze from the pyrotechnics on Merseyside, with fans jubilant at finally getting to see their team celebrate after having not been able to back in 2020.

However, the parade was overshadowed by an incident that took place after the conclusion of the celebrations, when a vehicle reportedly struck supporters after the team bus had exited the city centre. Videos emerged on social media shortly after 6pm which showed a heavy police presence on Water Street.

Several ambulances and fire engines were also on the scene. Posting on X, the statement from the Prime Minister read: "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.

"I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident. I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate."

Following the incident, a 53-year-old white British man has been arrested. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre.

"We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street.

"The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them."

Liverpool fans in attendance at the parade have also shared their eyewitness accounts of the shocking scenes. Talking to Sky News, one fan said: "We were like sardines walking up the street, we heard a lot of beeping and screaming and when we looked up there was a black people carrier driving straight towards. Me and my friend pulled her little girl out of the way."
