Liverpool parade is'major incident'after as Merseyside police confirm who driver is

Merseyside Police has published a post saying a major incident has been declared after a clips emerged showing a car driving into a crowd of people in Liverpool.

Hundreds of thousands were enjoying the Liverpool FC Premier League victory parade when the incident happened. Shocking videos of the scenes have been shared online. Merseyside police have since said: "A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area has been arrested after a car ploughed into a crowd of people during Liverpool FC's victory parade, Merseyside Police said.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre. We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

"Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision."

The police had earlier said: "We are currently dealing with reports of an RTC in Liverpool city centre. We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Mon 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male detained."

However in the accompanying picture it says 'major incident'.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said in a statement shared to X/Twitter: "We are currently liaising with Merseyside Police regarding an incident on Water Street in the city centre. Updates to follow."

Liverpool have issued a statement saying: "We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling - my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.

"I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.

"I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate."
