Real Madrid and Liverpool are reportedly close to reaching an agreement that could see Trent Alexander-Arnold play in the upcoming Club World Cup.
Alexander-Arnold played his last minutes as a Liverpool player on Sunday, coming on in the second half as the Reds secured a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in the last match of the season.
He has already announced that his time at his boyhood club will come to an end this season.
However, there is still no official announcement about his next club.
Real Madrid are reportedly his next destination, but the Spanish club are pushing to register the Liverpool right-back before the FIFA Club World Cup begins on June 18.
The move, initially planned as a free transfer on July 1, is tipped to be fast-tracked to ensure his participation in the tournament, sparking complex negotiations between the clubs.
Real Madrid’s campaign in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup kicks off against Al Hilal in Miami on June 184, nearly two weeks before Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool contract expires on June 30.
However, Liverpool is under no obligation to allow Alexander-Arnold to join another club before his contract officially ends on July 1, giving them full control over any negotiations.
Real Madrid had initially proposed a €1 million (£850,000) compensation package to Liverpool, covering both a symbolic transfer fee and Alexander-Arnold’s final month of wages (£720,000).
However, the proposal was rejected by the club, leading to the Spanish giants sending in a new proposal that is reportedly close to being accepted by Liverpool.
This is according to Spanish journalist, Lucas Navarrete, who claims that Liverpool and Real Madrid are ‘closing in on a €5 million agreement so that Alexander-Arnold can play in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.”
